In a word: bioavailability. In essence, bioavailability is the main reason that people choose to vape CBD over any other CBD intake method.

But what is bioavailability? Specifically, bioavailability refers to the amount of a substance that is able to produce an effect on the body. In that case, when CBD enters the body, some of it is filtered away or rendered useless by the body before it can take effect. Substances that allow less CBD to affect the body indeed have low bioavailability. On the other hand, substances that permit as much CBD as possible to hit the bloodstream have high bioavailability.

What percentage are we talking about?

Firstly, the percentage of the CBD that will actually affect the brain and body, or the bioavailability, is determined by a number of factors. For example, intake method (i.e., whether it is ingested, applied topically, or vaped) is a major one. So, the fact that a vape delivers the CBD straight to the lungs and then to the bloodstream is one of the main benefits of vaping CBD.

Other ways to take CBD include ingesting it orally and even rubbing it into your skin. However, these methods do not offer much in the way of bioavailability. For example, when you ingest CBD by swallowing it, the amount of CBD that will actually reach your bloodstream is only around 15%. However, when you vape it, that number increases to 50% or 60% bioavailability.

This is because vaping CBD gives it more direct access to your bloodstream, via the lungs. On the other hand, when it is ingested, it goes through the digestive system. At this instant, it meets filtration mechanisms like the liver before it can take effect. Consequently, liver enzymes break down much of the chemicals in CBD that give it the therapeutic benefits that users know and love.

Vaping CBD, however, bypasses this altogether and provides a direct and efficient hit.

What are terps and why do they make a difference?

By now we know that the diverse palate of cannabis flavors is impressive enough, and the names are really cool. But, arguably the most fascinating characteristic of terpenes is their ability to interact with other compounds in the plant, like cannabinoids. Lastly, for our purpose here we are talking CBD!

Until now, over 100 different terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant. At the same time,  every strain produces a unique terpene type and composition. The most fascinating characteristic of the family known as Terpene is their ability to interact synergistically with other compounds like cannabinoids, specifically cannabadiol – CBD.

Markedly, terpenes are fragrant essential oils secreted in differing concentrations in different cannabis strains alongside cannabinoids like CBD and THC. In like fashion, CBD and THC bind to cannabinoid receptors concentrated heavily in the body (CB2) and brain (CB1) respectively where non-psychoactive and psychoactive effects are produced.

Some terpenes also bind to these receptor sites and affect their chemical output. Others can modify how much of each compound CBD and THC passes through the blood-brain barrier. Their hand of influence is called the “entourage effect”. And, by an large reaches to neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin by altering their rate of production and destruction, their movement, and availability of receptors.

The effects these mechanisms produce vary from terpene to terpene. Some are especially successful in relieving stress, while others promote focus and acuity.
